El nombre proviene de la montaña Balcanes – La Montaña Vieja – que se extiende desde la parte central de Bulgaria hacia el este de Serbia. El antiguo nombre griego de la Península Balcánica fue “Península Hemus”. Los Balcanes son cercados con agua por tres lados: el mar negro en el este y el mar mediterráneo en el sur y en el oeste por el mar adriático, jónico, egeo. La ubicación geográfica define la identidad de los pueblos de Los Balcanes. Esta región fue conocida históricamente como cruce da las muchas culturas. Durante el primer milenio antes de Cristo Los Balcanes eran parte del gran Imperio Bizantino, el heredero del Imperio Romano en la parte oriental del Mediterráneo. El Imperio Bizantino, cuya capital era la ciudad greco-romana Constantinopla, fue constituida por una población multiétnica y orgullosa de ser heredera del antiguo Imperio Romano. Es cierto que los bizantinos consideraban a su país como Imperio romano del oriente. Los Balcanes justo representan esta unión entre Imperio romano y el griego, el territorio donde se encuentran religiones tanto catolicismo y ortodoxia, como el islam y cristianismo. Los Balcanes de hoy en día representan una región de diferentes idiomas, de los cuales algunos son idiomas eslavos, idiomas romances, la lengua turca, el griego, albanés etc.
